1. Make sure you have a valid Gmail account. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many people try to set up their SMTP settings without a valid Gmail account.

2. Go to the Gmail website and log in to your account. Once you're logged in, click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner and select "Settings."

3. Scroll down to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" section and make sure that the "IMAP Access" and "POP Download" options are both turned on.

4. Next, click on the "Add a new mail account" link.

5. Enter your name, email address, and password. Make sure that the "Treat as an alias" option is selected.

6. Lastly click on the "Add Account" button.

How to change your Gmail SMTP settings

Troubleshooting your Gmail SMTP settings

To troubleshoot your SMTP settings, you can check if you're using the correct SMTP server for Gmail. The server for Gmail is smtp.gmail.com, and the port is 465. Also make sure that your SMTP username and password are correct. You can find these in the "Advanced" tab of your Gmail settings.

If you're still having trouble, you can try enabling SSL. SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a protocol that encrypts email messages. To enable SSL, go to the "Advanced" tab of your Gmail settings and select "SSL" from the drop-down menu next to "Use SSL."
